✓ Utilization of appropriate codes is essential to describe the diagnoses for which patients are treated and any procedures performed during the individual encounters.
✓ Wound care professionals can assist the coders to select accurate codes by specifically documenting each wound care encounter.
✓ The three coding systems used for wound care products, procedures, and services are the International Classification of Diseases (ICD – 10) Clinically Modified, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®), and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
Skills needed for Coder to Code Wound Pros:
✓ Strong Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
✓ E/M Coder with previous home care coding and strong knowledge of HCPCS codes and unit calculation.
✓ Strong Knowledge of Supplies codes, Skin graft, Debridement, and Podiatry.
✓ Need critical thinking to solve denials.
✓ Problem-solving and being comfortable with teamwork.
